Tooth Fairy, Santa & Gizmo

13 October 2009 19 Comments

GizzyMy son had a friend sleep over the other night.  The boys went up to bed and took our puppy with them.  I’m guessing they held him hostage until they fell asleep, because an hour later the puppy came running downstairs.

The puppy ended up sleeping with me and when I woke up in the morning he went barreling into the boys room and jumped on their bed. Apparently the boys took this to mean the dog had been with them the entire night.

My son comes downstairs with his friend and the puppy and announces:

“Gizzy slept with us the whole night!”

Uh. Hmmm.

Me: “Yes he did, baby. He wanted to be in on the sleep over.”

Does it matter that it’s not really true? No, right?  It’s one of those Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy type things.  He believes it. It makes him smile.

My little secret.

I am against lying and truly hate being lied to. But this is different isn’t it. Santa isn’t a lie, he is a myth. Seeing the look of joy on his face, you couldn’t have done anything else.

Yup, all good. That is what childhood is all about. Plenty of time to be a jaded adult.

I’m developing an idea about telling my son that we all pretend to believe in Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy et al. This way I’m not lying and he doesn’t grow up to figure out slowly that the world that he thought was so magical really just isn’t. It encourages his imagination and spirit of awe without the lie. I’m not speaking on the dog story because I think that was great and adorable and not really lying at all. Any thoughts?

It’s the traditions of these characters I love to believe in. And that’s not pretending, RIght?
