Too Much Togetherness

13 December 2009 31 Comments

help_keyI’m not sure if it’s the season of craziness or moods or the weather, but two member of this family have been irritable and cranky.  Not me of course, because I am perfect. (Don’t say a word.) It’s my husband and son.  Non stop bickering. I’ve been like Henry Kissinger implementing peace treaties and pacts.

Schedules here are crazy. I’m not sure how families with more than one child juggle all the activities and schedules. At first, I thought I’m just incompetent but when I listed all of my son’s events, life events, holidays, work and family obligations I came to see that as a whole, we are in overwhelm.

So this weekend, with the assistance of crummy weather and plans cancelled due to a friend’s flu symptoms we tried something different. Doing…….N O T H I N G for an entire weekend. I instituted a weekend of family time.

We actually ate meals AT the table and TOGETHER. We played several rounds of Hanukah gift number 2, Connect 4×4.  Set up gift number 1, my son’s IPod Touch. Rented some movies. Cooked together. Hung out together. And for the first time in several weeks, laughed together.

It really was a nice, peaceful family weekend.

The downside? I have not had two minutes to myself. I had to sneak into my office just to grab some alone time. And here I sit, hiding to write a post. Don’t make me go back into the family room where my husband, son and dog are all piled up on the sofa. Don’t make me climb over the ottoman to sit back down in the tiny corner section where I have been sitting for the past hour watching America’s Funniest Videos.

There has got to be something in between chaos and constant togetherness…..

Monday morning can not get here fast enough for me

Sometimes the lazy weekends work for us and sometimes they don’t. Because of ilness we all are not so nice here in my household, so the peaceful togetherness you described won’t be happening. I am envious!

It’s amazing how it’s non-stop, huh? We really don’t have much time for ourselves at all… that’s the main reason why I love working in an office, outside of the home! But family weekends are the best, are they not? I cherish them!

I was watching America’s Funniest Home Videos too! Did you see the one where the two boys were out in the snow and the first one ducked and the second one got hit smack in the face with the snowball? My son and I hit the floor laughing over that!

My weekdays and weekends are about the same here since the kids are grown.

Your post made me laugh! The first time we instituted our “un-plugged” Sundays (no TV, Xbox, computer, etc.) the family togetherness about killed me. Sure, we had a blast but later in the day you found me hiding in my closet, checking my blackberry (it was running on batteries so technically unplugged, right?) just to get away. I’m with the kids all week long – We all need a break from that sometimes!

I am so with you…I never thought that my family was together more than any other, but I am quickly realizing that we are. We tend to hang together all weekend, neither one of us is out on weeknights, etc. We laugh nervously when a long weekend comes along because we are always at each other’s throats by the end of the 3 days!
