The Last Year?

26 December 2009 23 Comments

I think this is it. The last year my son will believe in the Santa/Chimney/Naughty/Nice thing.  He questioned me endlessly this year and examined every single detail. I think this year he just really wanted to believe. He wasn’t ready to let go of  Santa, and that was completely fine with me.

Question #1: ” Our roof isn’t flat so how does his sled land on it?” I’m happy to report that he heard reindeer on the roof in the middle of the night, which diminished the importance of this question.

Question #2: “How come Santa has the same wrapping paper we have?”  Answered this one with: There aren’t that many wrapping paper patterns and I guess we chose the same one! The truth is that my husband wrapped the gifts this year, and there in lies the problem. I’m always careful to not use the same paper on gifts that come from Santa.

Question #3:  “Did you or daddy buy me the slippers? It had a price tag on it, and Santa doesn’t go shopping. He makes his gifts.”  This question was sidetracked when another gift was passed his way.

It was sweet while it lasted. The cookies left on a plate. The glass of milk. Leaving the fireplace open and waking in the morning to hear him yelling through the house “Santa was here!”.  Remember that I am Jewish and the excitement Santa generated for him has always truly amazed me.

The hit gift this Christmas, in case you haven’t noticed yet?

The Nintendo DSI.

Every second possible.

And mine? The camera. Clearly.

Hey, did your new camera inspire the open sharing of photos of your son? I just decided it would be ok to share actual photos. Until now, I felt as if it were some sort of breech. But I cannot resist. I am glad you cannot, as well. Great pics. We just learned the magic of Santa so I cannot imagine the day when “the truth” is discovered.

We’ve had to get more creative… No tags on gifts, wrapping paper JUST for the Santa gifts… special tags and handwriting. The list goes on. My kids being five years apart may make it more complicated as time goes on. (As an aside, my daughter got the DSI for her birthday and LOVES it!!)

I have my “of course there is a Santa Claus” speech all prepared if you need it, complete with the history of Saint Nick down to the spirit of Santa and how it lives in all the magical “gifts” of Christmas. But like you, I’m bracing myself.

The DS has saved many days this vacation so far. My son believes in Santa. He brought him a new game for his DS. My daughter knows it was brought her step father, who gave her an ugly doll that is a dog…her now favorite thing.

Well, it happens eventually! I was seven years old when I found out. Christmas was just as special anyway. I am looking forward to the time when my son understands about Santa. He is only one-yr old.

Awwww, how sweeet! I am having some of those issues here too, though my guy is only five and very much believes, he is detail oriented and I wouldn’t be surprised if he started pointing out where “made in China” is printed on some of the toys soon!
How old is your son? So glad you got to savor the magic this year!!!
    Have fun with your camera!!

LOVING your present! Do you know, that photo of Gizzy on snow day, I thought was a stock photo! That dog could do TV she’s so cute!

Anyway, I totally got the Santa doubt thing this year too. Wrote a post on it here.

And, I always wrap Santa’s presents in different paper too. I saw a fellow mom write how she gets her fam to pick out the paper to send off to Santa. That’s a good idea too!

the husband and i were talking yesterday about how neither of us really believed or didn’t believe in Santa and what to tell our kids about him (they are 2 and a half and 5 months). a couple friends of mine said when they found santa wasn’t real it was drama for them…wondering if there’s a way to avoid it.

glad you had a happy holiday!

Definitely the end of an era if he is asking so many Santa questions. I’m surprised it hasn’t been spoiled for him at school before this. Enjoy it while it lasts, I’m just glad Santa found him!

We don’t celebrate Christmas here in Israel (I’m also IsraeliMom.org), but I can relate with our tooth fairy! On the last tooth, with one son 8 and the other 6, they were fairly skeptical. I wonder how many teeth she’s going to last…

the Santa hype was soooooo big in our house this year — until the morning of – Santa failed to please one of the daughters and i am still being questioned as to why Santa didn’t buy what was on her list — and the damn thing that she wants is out of stock everywhere so i can’t even pretend that santa forgot or delivered it late — the pressures of being a mom!
your son is so cute — love the sitting, or lack of sitting rather, on the chair -such a boy!
