Taking My Own Advice

18 December 2009 17 Comments

So I’m sitting here all chilled out for the first time in what feels like…….months. I have not had any time alone for myself in……..you guessed it……months.

When my son was born, I was 36. After 36 years with freedom of choice, it was a difficult transition into motherhood. I traveled a lot. My husband traveled a lot. WE traveled a lot. I could be spontaneously spontaneous and completely, utterly selfish. I could spend an entire day in bed doing whatever the heck I wanted to do.  And then……poof. Motherhood. Anti-everything I just wrote about.

I love my son to pieces. He’s the center of my galaxy. I’d do motherhood again with him, in a heartbeat. But lately I feel like I am gasping for air. My husband is going through an emotionally rough time lately. Which means the house is going through an emotionally rough time. Which makes my son a little clingy to me. Which means I’m not getting any quality alone time for myself. To relax, put my feet up, get lost in my own head.

And then it hit me. I don’t take my own advice very well.  I wrote a post back on August 5, 2009:

pillowcases_pillow_smThese pillow cases say it all.

There is nothing like a night off from mommyhood, wifehood, businesshood.

Nothing like getting human with makeup on and your hair in something other than a pony tail. Getting dressed in something that makes you feel good. So that you remember you are a person and not a machine.

And nothing like a night to escape the madness with some really good friends.

The key to keeping sane is some time to do things at your own speed and for yourself.  Because you’re “no good” to anyone if you aren’t good to yourself too.

Aren’t these pillow cases the best??

I needed to read this tonight. I guess this is why it’s great to have a blog? A diary?

Sometimes you need stop being so giving with your great advice and take some for yourself. I’m not in the mood for a girl’s night out though. I’m collecting my sanity by taking a night to myself on the sofa with my hair in a pony tail, comfy sweats  and big fluffy white socks on. My son is sleeping at his friend’s house. My husband is traveling for work and will be back tomorrow. I have a great movie rented and my favorite Ben & Jerry’s in the freezer. A fire going and a big comfy blanket to snuggle under.

Tonight I Exhale.

Sounds like a great plan and I love those pillow cases! The again, my husband might not know the meaning of “off duty”. He thinks “no” really means “on.” LOL!!!

I LOVE nights like this – although they don’t happen very often at all. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! (And that Ben & Jerry’s wouldn’t be Chunky Monkey, would it?)

Ben and Jerry’s!!! Can I come over? That stuff is sooo good. I’m glad to hear that you are treating yourself to a night alone. We all need that deeply sometimes. I know that I get burnt to the core occasionally, no matter how much I love and cherish my family. Sometimes we all just need a little *me* time! I’m happy I read your post tonight and happy to know I’m not the only one that feels this way. Take care. I’ll visit again real soon!

I hope your night is wonderful. And I agree, that is another one of the perks of blogging. It gives us a chronicle of our lives – where we’ve been and where we’re going.

I became a mother at age 37. I enjoyed years of doing as I pleased and I was never convinced I would become a mother until I was 36 and decided that I did want to be a mother. One of the most difficult things for me is adjusting to not having hours on end for myself. It’s hard.

I’m taking a sick day or two…for real. But it is nice to sit under a Snuggie and watch a bunch of ‘B’ movies and drink hot chicken soup….even if my head is pounding and my trash can is full of dirty tissue.
