Poor Amelia

25 October 2009 35 Comments

AAAADMpHaSYAAAAAAF_jhQSaw the movie ‘Amelia’ last night with my son and my parents.  Why? Because her free spirit has intrigued me since I first read about her in 5th grade. She is such an idol of mine that a poster of her hangs in my office. It’s an advertisement, but her image and the words “Think Different”  keeps me motivated.

If you aren’t familiar with her there is this from Reference Center:

Earhart, Amelia:  âr’härt, 1897–1937, American aviator, b. Atchison, Kans. She was the first woman to cross the Atlantic by airplane (1928) and the first woman to make a solo flight across the Atlantic (1932). She was the first person to fly alone from Honolulu to California (1935). In 1937, she attempted with a copilot, Frederick J. Noonan, to fly around the world, but her plane was lost on the flight between New Guinea and Howland Island. In 1992, a search party reported finding remnants of Earhart’s plane on Nikumaroro (formerly Gardner Island), Kiribati, but their claims were disputed by people who worked on Earhart’s plane, and her fate remains a mystery. In 1964, Geraldine Mock was the first woman to successfully complete Earhart’s round-the-world route. Earhart was married to G. P. Putnam (1887–1950) in 1931.

Okay so I sidetracked from the movie review. Ready for it?

AWFUL. Completely. Save the money and put it towards something more enjoyable, like super soft, 4 ply toilet paper.  Or a new Yankee Candle.

The best part of the movie was just before it started, when my son sat in his seat between my parents and announced that he had just hurt his “nuts” on the armrest.  The conversation that ensued was pretty entertaining. Nothing like listening to grandparents trying to talk about body parts and appropriateness with a straight face.  My mom’s solution was the funniest: “Next time say that you’ve hurt your privates”  Um, yes, that will happen.

If you have to see it, enjoy it the way my mom did.  Keep awake for the first 15 minutes. Sleep through the next hour or so and wake back up for the last 20 minutes.

And on a side note…to anyone that lives in the New York Metro areas: Did your weekend go to “you know where” in a hand basket?  Everything for yesterday was rained out and thrown into today.  Out the window went my relaxing Sunday…..

That’s dissapointing. However, I had to laugh – not only at your son and the “nuts” comment, but your mom sleeping through the movie. The last show I went to with my mom was BIG in 1988. I looked over at her to see if she was loving it and she was sound asleep. I elbowed her in outraged indignation, she went flying, and we’ve never been to the cinema together again.

I am so glad you did this review. Honestly I am. I also have been fascinated with her story since a young age. I have often wondered what exactly happened to her. I’m glad to know I shouldn’t waste the money on the movie. Thanks for saving me some money and time!

The books I’ve read were way better than this movie. They tried to play up the romance on it, but Richard Gere was way to flat for it to ever remotely seem real or intense.

If you ask me (and I know you didn’t), they should have not ended the movie with the plane gone missing. They should have followe it afterwards with how they tried to locate her. What they did afterwards. Just a very poor script to me.

You know, I read another review of the movie that pretty much said the same thing. Which is surprising considering how most of Hilary Swank’s movies have been very successful. Guess she missed the mark on this one!!

Loved the comment your son made!!

HIllary Swank was pretty good. Cardboard would have done a better job with Richard Gere’s role. The script was really just a dud. Flat, flat movie.

My son……he hasn’t quite gotten down the art of processing what’s in his brain before he speaks. Not sure what age this skill develops at.

Loved the “nuts” on the armrest and your mother’s explanation. That’s how my mother describes body parts. It’s less embarrassing for said mother but more confusing for child.

That’s too bad that the movie stunk. I wanted to see it. Though when it comes to cable, maybe I’ll take your advice and just watch the first 15 minutes and sleep through the rest of the film.

It poured here (in CT) Saturday night and Sunday was dry. Today is beautiful.

Generally if I pick a movie to see, (which is about 2 times a year.) you can be guaranteed it will be bad. Don’t get in line at the supermarket behind me either, I pick the wrong line there too!
