PMS Zone
My day off yesterday didn’t end up the way I had hoped and this morning I woke up so far on the wrong side of the bed, that I should completely be in another time zone. I know I am pms’ing and very honestly I feel on the semi-vile side of life. It seems that if something is bothering me during PMS, it consumes me. And the topic that consumes me this month is the recession.
I walked into Kohls to pick something up for my son and the nicest older gentleman held the door open for me and welcomed me into the store. He’s an employee of Kohl’s and he was just the cheeriest man. I am thinking that he is probably somewhere in his late 60′s/early 70′s. I walked into that store with a big smile, just because it was so nice to see someone so full of life. And HAPPY!
And then I walked around and I thought about it. This economy really sucks. Everyone is effected by it in some way. Your present life, the quality of your life in the future.
This gentleman should be retired and enjoying life. He should not have to work. He could have been my dad. And I would want my dad to be able to retire and enjoy life. I would want my dad to not have to worry about having enough money to live. He worked hard his entire life. He did everything he was supposed to do. Save, invest, spend wisely. And the economy went so incredibly wrong for my dad and his peers.
Now of course I made up this gentleman’s life story. He could be working because he wants to. Right? He really was so happy and smiley. It could absolutely be his choice to work.
One of my clients is closing his doors on a business that has been around for 3 generations. A business that was thriving up until 3 years ago when sales started dropping. With the fall of the market this past year, their reserve funds depleted immensely and so did the outlook for the company’s future. There went advertising money and any form of cushioning. The owner of the company is in his late 40′s and in total despair about his future. Who will hire someone his age? Why would someone hire him? How will he survive? He is worried. Very.
I came home I read a few blogs. I see so many posts about how people are hurting right now. Job losses, late mortgage payments. People are broke. Crime rates are up in the news. Suicide rates are up. I’m guessing anti-depressant prescriptions are up.
Enough!
We are so due. Due for a reason to be optimistic and believe that things will turn around. I could easily get into politics here and the whole “Change we can believe in” Obama slogan. I didn’t vote for the man, but I was still hopeful he would bring new energy into our country. This is now where I exit gracefully out of any political discussion.
We need to not feel awful because we are worried about whether or not Santa will actually visit our children this year. We need to be able to sleep without worrying about our jobs being there the next day. A peaceful night’s sleep is not too much to ask for.
To quote ‘Times Online‘:
Responding to a question at an event held by the Brookings Institute, an economics think tank, Mr Bernanke said: “Even though from a technical perspective the recession is very likely over at this point, it’s still going to feel like a very weak economy for some time“.
This recession began in December of 2007. It’s now October 2009. I’m ready for it to be half past “some time“………..

This is a truly awesome post. I could not agree more. I’m ready too.

Oh wow… great post. I could not agree with you more.
“A peaceful night’s sleep is not too much to ask for.” ~ well said.
I live in Canada, and we have been hit hard as well. And like you mentioned, I am also saddened to see people that shouldn’t have to be working, or working that extra job, just to make ends meet.
I’ll steer away from my politcal views, and just say, on a personal note… Santa’s definately on a budget this year in my house! And I have lost many a nights sleep wondering how I will support my daughter. It’s not right. Bottom line.

This is a good post…almost makes me want to cry because things suck so much. Our business is going out of business, we’re two months behind on everything, house included. Went on medicaid in the meantime so our kids can still have medical coverage and it’s a fight to find anyone who will take medicaid because apparently that makes you a lesser person. I spent the day on the phone trying to figure out our life and the big companies have NO grasp of what it’s like in the real world. They’re clueless…but anyway. I’ll get off here and spare you the gory details, but thanks for writing this. It helps to know that we’re all together in this!

I’m sorry for what you’re going through, Dawn. It’s got to get better. Hugs to you and your family.

Everybody is being extra careful right now. Here in PA the state still has no budget. That trickles down to all state employees and if things don’t change soon, some county employess will be laid off. (There are hiring and spending freezes all over.) I am hopeful that things will turn around, but you are right-it may be a slow turn.

I really don’t believe the recession is over. I think it’s a spin trying to get us to start spending money or something, especially since the holidays are coming. I’m not spending any more money this year than I did last year. So there.

To me this has bordered on a full blown depression, only no administration would want to own that term.

One thing that is going to keep the economy really slow is the fact that businesses decided to cut back they would give no promotions. No cost of living increases, yet groceries and gas and electricity seem to keep going up. Next year businesses are going to say, well we didn’t give any out last year why should we this year

Girl, I am exactly the same way. I was just PMS’ing and totally obsessing, but about something else.
And yes, this recession sucks….and the sad thing is, I think we have a long way to go. =(

Hey I totally agree with you. I moved in with my boyfriend when I found out I was pregnant in 07 and for the two years we have been living together its been tough. I didn’t get to decorate my baby’s room like I would have liked (she doesn’t even have her own room) and by now I’ve managed to learn how to save here and there but its still tough!!!!!

Here’s to hoping that times will get better and lighter. The dow finally broke 10,000 again so maybe it’s a sign that things are headed in a more positive direction for everyone. I know I could sure use some good news for a change.
