Nothing Like a Snow Day

Nothing Like a Snow Day

In anticipation of a major snow storm, we in the “If Evolution” household decreed today to be a lazy snow day. Perhaps we should have waited until it actually snowed, because as of 6pm we maybe had half an inch of the 8 to 12 inches forecast for us.  Hmmmph.

My husband chose to nap most of the day away, but my son and I chose to…..C O O K.

Now understand, this is not a home filled with the scents of freshly made cookies, stews or wonderful home-made aromas. Except of course if you count me lighting some homey scented Yankee Candle.  If they would come out with a Thanksgiving dinner scent, I’d be golden.

No, this is the house where if you asked my son at the age of 5 what he wanted for dinner, you found a child running to the junk drawer to select the menu du jour.  I kid you not.

So cooking here…..is a treat. A novelty. Quite frankly, rare.

With the music on in the background, my son and I made chili from scratch as well as cornbread biscuits. We made butterscotch chip cookies and chocolate chip cookies too.  He did most of the work for all of it. My function was to follow him around the kitchen cleaning up and making sure that no body parts were harmed in the process.  As did the dog, who was treated to dropped onion pieces, flour and bits of scrambled eggs among who knows what else.

He’s always loved cooking and is the king of every breakfast dish possible. Scrambled eggs, (almost) sunny side up eggs, bacon, french toast and omelettes. His claim to fame however are his fluff (yes, that marshmallow topping) pancakes. All of it is pretty awesome to me and beats being glued in front of an XBox any day.

At this very moment, 7:30pm, it is FINALLY snowing the way we had hoped for all day. My son is making individual funnel cakes for us. Mine has confectioners sugar topping, as well as cinnamon sugar topping, in addition to brown sugar topping.  ‘Nuf said. Thank heavens for Brioschi Antacid, because this funnel cake is doing me in.

The best part of it all was getting to spend one on one time with him this way.  I answered the ever burning question “What is a ho?” with “A girl that dates too many boys at once”. I found out that one boy in his class keeps getting in trouble for not keeping his fingers out of his nose. I now know that some girl named Maci has a big mouth and told everyone that Olivia has a crush on my son, however she is now embarrassed and won’t look at him anymore.

Maybe the delay in this storm was for the best, because I’d be very happy with a REAL snow day tomorrow. Today was pretty fun!

What a wonderful day! Snow or no snow! And as you pointed out you find out so much about your kids when you’re doing an activity as “uneventful” as cooking together. Sounds like my kind of day. Hope you have another one tomorrow!

Sorry for the NJ dig, but when my bladder was nearly exploding I was cursing your state, big time! You’ll have to e-mail me and tell me where you are, I can wave on the way home next week! We did get some decent snow here, but I didn’t head out in it at all. Tomorrow will be another day. Seriously, I’m guessing the cold weather here will be rougher than what we’ll have when we head up to ME. That wind sounds brutal, so good for you for staying out of it! Sounds like your day was delightful. LOVE it, and that you shared it with us. And love your ‘ho’ answer. Jotting it down for future reference.

That photo of that dog? OMG, just too stinkin’ cute. (Am partial to shih tzus because we had one when I was a little girl and I loved that dog.)

Sounds like you had a great day of cooking!

We are getting pounded with about 20″ of snow here … hasn’t stopped snowing for 24 hours. I guess the good thing is that there is another snow day in our future tomorrow!

Yes, these kinds of days are the stuff memories are made from. Actually, driving in the car to one of many appointments for my son and sitting down at the table are where we get lots of enlightening conversations.

That is so great, a snow day with electricity (we don’t get many of those here) and a chance to do some baking and connect with your child. What a great 1950’s day! Too many parents today are too busy to spend that quality time with their kids. Well done, what a great memory you have made.
