I Shut My Mouth (Reluctantly)

I’m heavily involved in my town’s football program. My son is in the PeeWee division, going into 4th grade. Tonight was the first night of sizing kids for equipment. My son came with me.
Tonight:
- When he wanted to goof around playing football (no equipment on) with kids 3 and 4 years older than him, I shut my mouth.
- When I saw him “guarding” a kid forty pounds larger that him, I shut my mouth.
- When I saw him get tossed by another kid who was 6 inches taller than him, I shut my mouth.
- When I saw him begin to hang out by where I was working, I shut my mouth.
When we were relaxing before bed time tonight, he told me that one of the kids “straight armed” him (I didn’t know what it meant either, don’t feel bad) and that he wanted to cry, but “sucked it up”…….I shut my mouth.
Another milestone……he is sucking up the urge to cry. Now I’m the one that wants to cry….another piece of his “babyness” is fading away.

You’re a good mom! It’s bittersweet watching them become “men”

I can see why this is so tough! I’ll be following in your footsteps. I can just imagine how hard this will be!

I know exactly how you feel–the struggle to keep your mouth shut when your children are trying to grow up and be tough: In my post “Perceiver of Truth,” one son had a broken wrist out on the field:

I think that’s the beginning of the pulling away, growing into an independent young man (even though he’s still so little) to allow him to deal with the protocol of challenges (i.e. getting hurt) in a sphere where you are on the sidelines, which is where, as a mom, you end up when they grow up. It’s tough, but it needs to be done. Then we start wanting to cry and have to suck it up!
You did a beautiful job with those pulling away tugs!

He most certainly is becoming a young man. his arms no longer have that baby pudge to them. Instead they have definition and muscle tone. I’m so proud of him…I look at him in awe sometimes.

Recently, I had a moment like this with my son at tae kwon do when he hurt his foot. I could tell he was fighting the urge to cry, but nevertheless managed to suck it up and keep going. Sometimes it’s difficult to know when to run and comfort him vs. when to let him tough it out. Now I’m worried about embarrassing him! I can’t believe how fast he’s grown up!
