Halloween Deflated
I have ALWAYS loved Halloween. As a child. As an adult. When we purchased our home, I went all out with decorations and music and candy. But it was when my son was born that I had a real reason to really dive into the holiday. I was thrilled! Pumpkin picking, hayrides, haunted houses, parties for his friends. Dress him up, take him out trick-or-treating. Completely in my glory.
He was 9 months old here:

And here, a year later at 21 months:

First Halloween:

Second Halloween:

A face full of candy (or something food related) and one of my most favorite pictures:

There have been 6 Halloweens since then filed with the usual assortment of Power Ranger, S.W.A.T., Ninja, and pirate costumes. This summer we had been talking about putting something really fun and unusual together.
So imagine the horror I felt when my son announced a few days ago:
I’m not into Halloween this year. I just want to stay home and scare people when they answer the door.”
WHAT? Isn’t 9 years old too young to throw in the towel here? I think I went out begging for candy until I was about 12.
Does this mean I can’t go trick-or-treating anymore? I’m hugely disappointed but I am still hopeful that 2 seconds after one of his friends rings the doorbell, he’ll throw on SOMETHING and take me trick-or-treating again this year.

Cut photos and yes, 9 is definitely too young to stop trick or treating! You would think the lure of all the candy and treats would have him counting down the days!

I would think so too! I’m really so shocked that he isn’t into it
[Reply]
It can’t be! I hung on to trick or treating way into my teens. Does he not realize he won’t collect the loot?

Ok that was just the sweetest post. I actually said, “awww” out loud. You still have a couple of days, maybe he will change his mind.

Oh no! Nine is too young to stop! Maybe it will be a temporary thing and he will want to trick or treat next year. I remember trick or treating until I was at least 13 or 14.
Cute pictures!

He just seems so “mature” lately. I’m hoping it’s just a short lived mood thing and that he’ll wake up on Saturday being more “into” it.

My son is 9, too! And he wore that Woody costume on his 2nd Halloween. He is Trick Or Treating this year. 9 seems a little young to be over it.

My dad bought him that Woody costume and a pair of cowboy boots to go with it. He even got him changed into the costume too. My fav part of that costume was the big padded behind he had in it with his diapers on.
So cute!

Definitely too young! I think we still went out at 13/14! I wouldn’t want to give up all the candy so soon!

I went out until about that age too. Now that I think about it though, I haven’t seen any older kids trick or treating at my house in ages. Maybe it becomes “uncool” earlier now?
[Reply]
Maybe he’s concerned that if his mom goes out trick or treating that someone needs to be home to man the candy. I mean, you can’t just leave a bowl with a note, that never works.

He’s done trick or treating at 9? That’s okay, sometimes I think it’s more fun to answer the door too. You get to stay nice and warm and still get a great experience. The pictures are adorable!

I love this holiday too-I think I was 14 when I stopped trick-or-treating. (I donned a witches hat and fake nose last year because I was determined to get into the spirit, but my daughter was mortified and my husband thought I lost it-hee,hee, hee…) Maybe he will change his mind.

i’m thinking 9 is definitely the beginning of the end. my nine year old has given up on the highly imaginative character costumes and gone for the creepy factor instead. he’s being the grim reaper this year. i’m so sad about that. he isn’t giving up trick or treating yet, though, so there is still hope yet!

I am thinking he will end up going at the very last minute. Right after he sees one of his friends going door to door. He’ll probably end up throwing on his Football uniform or something.

Those pictures are adorable. As soon as one of his buddies shows up at the door with a huge haul of candy, he’ll probably change his mind, unless he starts reading the business section of the Times and finishing the crossword puzzle.
